Volunteering

Members of the Edmonton Radial Railway Society can contribute in many ways. Even if you can only volunteer a few times each year (e.g. for our Casinos), you can make a valuable contribution to our Society. Each member should have no problem finding his or her niche within our volunteer organization.

Some areas include:

1. Operating Streetcars

Learn to drive streetcars and become a motorman/woman! Applicants need a valid driver's license, must be at least 21 years old and should enjoy interacting with people. Classes for new members start each spring. The course requires a minimum of six evenings of instruction in Fort Edmonton Park. Upon successful completion of training you will be expected to complete a minimum of 8 shifts in Fort Edmonton Park.

2. Streetcar Restoration

Ongoing streetcar restoration is carried out in the society's main workshop at the Fort Edmonton Park Streetcar Barn. The jobs range widely from metal to wood work, machining, upholstery, painting, electrical wiring, etc. Even manufacturing of new parts takes place! Work sessions take place at the Streetcar Barn all year on Saturdays, Tuesdays and Thursdays.

3. Maintenance and Cleaning

Regular streetcar and track maintenance, greasing and cleaning are further important jobs to keep the wheels turning both at Fort Edmonton Park and at the High Level Bridge. Even less technically skillful members will find something meaningful to do.

4. Museum Operations

Our streetcar museum is located in the Strathcona Streetcar Barn and is open to the public on Saturdays throughout our operating season. If you enjoy history and interacting with the public, being one of our museum guides will be a great fit for you.

5. Website & Social Media

We are happy to accept volunteers who can create and edit content for our website and social media pages. Whether you are a writer, a graphic designer or a photographer, you can make a valuable contribution to the Edmonton Radial Railway Society's web presence.

5. Archive and Library Work

Besides restoring and operating real streetcars, the ERRS also collects publications, pictures, documents and artifacts related to the history of streetcars and public transportation in and around Edmonton. Donations and acquisitions are being catalogued and stored for future generations according to the recommendations of the Alberta Museums Association.
